Lions Projects - Shoebox Appeal

For a good many years now, Battle & Villages Lions Club, along with other Lions Clubs in our District, have collected goods to be sent to those less fortunate than ourselves in the Gomel region of Belarus which was badly affected by the Chernobyl disaster, thus demonstrating that Lions are in it for the long term. Each year, at least one lorry leaves the UK in the autumn packed full with humanitarian aid. Much of this aid is in the form of shoeboxes which have been packed and donated by schoolchildren and others across south-east England, hence the name 'Shoebox Appeal'.

This appeal has developed over the years into an annual shipment of humanitarian goods, and is a lifeline for hundreds of children, orphanages, schools and destitute families.

Shoeboxes now make up only about 15% of the donated aid. The rest is made up of generous donations of clothing, computers, educational equipment, toys, books and items that many of us take for granted but are a luxury to the disadvantaged families and children in Gomel, which is in the far South East corner of Belarus.

We are unable to send over flammable liquids, aerosols, perfumes, aftershave or deodorants, nail varnish, cigarette lighters, matches, foodstuffs of any sort including sweets and biscuits and little treats. No medical equipment, or associated items and medicines including vitamins and pain killers, etc….

If you would like to donate to this appeal please contact us at
